An "eye" in the sky is the latest weapon being used in Egypt's war against drug traffickers by Russell Pasha, British director of the Central Narcotics Intelligence Bureau and commandant of the Cairo City Police. With the aid of an Egyptian Army Air Force aeroplane, some hundreds of acres of poppy beds, destined for the clandestine manufacture of opium, have been discovered. They were hidden among tall crons, mostly corn, in the Assiut district of Upper Egypt. From the air, however, the gaudy poppy flower was easily discernible. Hearing rumours of such beds, Russell Pasha had despatched the military aeroplane. It flew low over the district and took a number of photographs. They were flown to Cairo and developed. Then 85 policemen were sent to Assiut by train from Cairo—a journey of 250 miles—to destroy the poppy plants and to beat *he fields for suspected persons.
