TABLE TENNIS

NOTES AND COMMENTS The New Zealand Table Tennis Association has approved of the application of the Otago Association to hold the South Island Championships in Dunedin on July 30 and 31. Inquiries have been received from Wellington, Invercargill and Christchurch, and large entries are anticipated in all sections. The placings on the association ladder are as follows:—Miller, G. Claridge, Stanton, Pollock, Harrop, Hall, Laidlaw, Barclay, Brown, C. Claridge, H. Claridge, Smyth. Miller held his position against G. Claridge 21—18, 21—19, after two excellent games. Claridge was driving well both forehand and backhand. Stanton defeated Pollock for third place. Stanton started at the bottom of the ladder and has played his way to third place without losing a challenge. The following additional applications have been received for positions on the Doubles ladder:—Laidlaw and Pollock, Everson and H. Claridge, Dobson and Hall, Otway and Mackinnon. As nine applications have been received to fill the eight positions on the ladder, the Match Committee will now decide the placings, after which challenges may commence. The sixth night of play has brought forth more interesting results in the A Grade. Y.M.C.A. suffered a reverse in going down to .Y.M.D. 14—18. This makes Y.M.D. equal with Dunedin, while Y.M.C.A. is second equal with Mayfair. Mayfair had an easy victory over Pioneer 29—3, Pioneer could do nothing right, while Mayfair were just the opposite, all members playing right on form, especially Laidlaw. Y.M.C.A. are unfortunate in that one or other of its regular team is generally out of town. In their match against Y.M.D. they lost 14—18. Dunbar was absent, while the fourth man, Grimes, only won one game. Y.M.D. played very consistently, Paape and Everson winning the majority of their games. Miller won his eight games, as is often the case, but was sadly let down by his.fellow team mates. Boyd apparently took things too easily, as he only won one game. Y.M.C.A. have a good team on paper, but on the floor it is a different matter. St. Clair had their third win in defeating Friends 21—11. Algie, for St. Clair, played remarkably well for so young a player, losing the only game to W. Friend. He is showing improvement through experience against A Grade players. Ramsay was also on his usual form, losing a game to W. Friend. W. Friend, although unlucky at times, played some good games. Dunedin had no difficulty in defeating Paramount 30—2. The Dunedin men to lose games were Smyth to.Mackinnon and Hall to Otway. ,< In the B Grade St. Patrick's suffered their first defeat in going down to Dunedin 14—18. Hart, for Dunedin, played well to win seven games. Bennett's are now in the lead, with Dunedin and St. Patrick's second equal. Bennett's defeated Locomotive 20—12, while South End I narrowly defeated Pioneer 17—15. The C Grade still shows Bennett'3 and Residents equal, for first place. Residents had no trouble in disposing of Chevrolet II 31—1, Allan losing th»* only game. Bennett's also had an easy win over P. and T. 23—9. Zenith and St. Patrick's I are second equal, each registering wins over Fire Brigade and Chevrolet I respectively. There were no surprises in the Ladies' Grade, although Red Triangle did not have such an easy victory over D.S.A. 11, only winning 19—13. The other winning teams all won by good margins. ~: i, r r
