MANAWATU BEATS WANGANUI TEN POINTS TO EIGHT (Per United Press Association) WANGANUI, June 9. After ,having the better of the first spell and holding Manawatu to 5 all at half time, Wanganui was defeated in a representative match to-day by 10 points to 8. Manawatu scored first when J. Finlay crossed the Wanganui line, and just before half time Culpan scored for Wanganui. In the second spell, M'Kenzie scored, Finlay converting and giving Manawatu a lead of 10—5. Wanganui reduced the leeway when Burgess scored. In the closing stages the Manawatu pack livened up considerably, and held the lead to the finish, with two points to spare. J. Finlay, of Manawatu, played an outstanding game. The visiting backs were disappointing. A RUNAWAY VICTORY HAWKE'S BAY DEFEATS WAIRARAPA (Per United Press Association) NAPIER, June 9. Before an attendance of 4000, Hawke's Bay repeated its success of Coronation Day, defeating Wairarapa by 47 points to 5. The Hawke's Bay backs proved too speedy, and their combination with the forwards often left the visitors badly out of position. Playing with the wind, the home team put on 26 points in the first half and, although Wairarapa held them for a period in the second spell, they again took command. Robins and Apsey played splendidly, while White, the Maori All Black, although scoring two tries, was often too crowded to make his devastating run. Johnson, Reid, Jackson and Bowman were the best of the forwards, the last-mentioned playing a fine game and combining well with his backs. Hume, Hutton and O'Callaghan played well, without being brilliant, while Hood, Varcoe and Walker were the pick of the Wairarapa pack. For Hawke's Bay tries were scored by Johnson (4), White (2), Herbert, Robins, Bradley and Wilson. Bradley converted six of the tries and Johnson one and kicked a penalty goal. In a Rugby football match to-day Manawatu B defeated Horowhenua by 18 points to 6. WELLINGTON COMPETITION (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 9. Marist Brothers Old. Boys 18, University 8. AUCKLAND BEATS SOUTH AUCKLAND SIXTEEN POINTS TO SIX (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 9. The return Rugby match between the Auckland and Waikato representatives resulted in a win for Auckland by 16 points to 6. The match was played at Eden Park in brilliant sunshine. The Auckland forwards were overshadowed in the first spell, but recovered in the second, when Hull and Drake were most conspicuous. Tries for Auckland were scored by Dick, Byerley, and Pepper, Hare converting two and also kicking a penalty, goal. Grace scored for Waikato and Aitken kicked a penalty goal. WIN FOR WEST COAST CANTERBURY DEFEATED (Per United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, June 9. The West Coast Rugby representatives defeated Canterbury by 23 points to 14; The match was played before 3500 spectators and in ideal conditions. The visitors were superior in the scrums and also in passing. Generally they combined better than the home players, who largely adopted defensive methods. The Coast team, however, made full use of its occasional scoring opportunities. The half-time score was 11 all. . , . Tries for the winners were scored by Gilbert, Agnew, Davidson and King.
