WANAKA COLLIE CLUB

SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL TRIALS NUMEROUS ENTRIES The Wanaka Collie Club held its annua) trials under favourable weather conditions. The entries were numerous and competitors from various parts of Otago and Southland vied with the local enthusiasts for the principal honours. The standard of work in the heading event was up to the average and in the huntaway class it was really excellent. At the conclusion of the trials Mr J. A. Nelson, of Southland, gave a most interesting exhibition of working four dogs simultaneously. Mr W. L. M’Kenzie, of Hakataramea, was judge. Following are the results:— Class 1 (Open). Head, Bring Back and Yard. First prize £6, second £3. third £2. fourth £l.—J. B. Queale’s Trim, 53 points, 1; J. Nelson’s Pat, 50 points, 2; J. B. Queale's Roy, 48 points, 3; J. Nelson's Ken, 46 points; 4. Class 1A (Maiden). First prize £3, second £2, third £l.—W. Anderson’s Tweed, 43 points, 1; J. Depree’s Meg, 41 points. 2; W. A. Scaife s Toby, 38 points, 3.

Judge’s comments; J. B. Queale’s Trim hunted on left, running freely on good line, and making good head in 2min 15sec. Lifted well, pulled well a little to left of line, recovered with good grip on approaching ring, penning wdlh good grip and style in 7min ssec. J. Nelson’s Pat hunted on right, running out freely on a fair line and making a good head in Imin 27sec. Showed poor grip of sheep at commencement of pull: dog wide to left. Recovered nice-ly after a racing pul), and penned after several attempts. Class 2; Head, Bring Back, and Hold in Ring; first prize, £3; second, £4; third, £2; fourth, £1. —E. Entered ring a little to right and steadied in good position. Time, 7min 30sec. J. B. Queale's Trim hunted on left, good line, but bored fn slightly at foot of hill. Redirected on approaching sheep, making a close head in 2min 30sec. Lifted well, pulling on good line, sheep racing to right, through no fault of dog. Lifted well, and commenced barking on pulling. Drifted to left, dog too much noise. Sheep to left and back of ring. _ Commenced hunting with dog a little out of position. Through first poles, dog punching well. Good line through second set, finishing with dog firm, on sheep. Time, llmin 17sec. E. E. Adam’s Skip hunted on right: barked. A little wide on hill, making a wide head in 2min 30sec. Commenced pulling on good line, dog too far off sheep. Sheep to back of man before blocking. Commenced hunting, dog standing well on sheep. Through first poles a little high: good approach to second set; dog in good position. Time, Bmm 48scc.
