Visiting institutes from Waitati, Seacliff Waikouaiti, Goodwood, and Palmerston were present. A telegram of greetings from Mrs Kirkland, president of the Mid-Otago Federation, was read The programme consisted of songs and dances. The grand inarch was led by Mrs Taiaroa (president) and partner. The event of the evening was the bringing in of the birthday cake, baked, iced, and decorated byMrs Jackson, of Dunedin. The vicepresidents, Mesdames Tubman and Barnes, wheeled it in, while the Maori party, in the true fashion of their race, welcomed it. The senior vice-presi-dent, Mrs Tubman, lighted the candle and the youngest member blew it out, then each of the visiting presidents spoke on behalf of their institutes, wishing Karitane every success. Mrs Caldwell, secretary, presented Mrs Taiaroa (president) with a bouquet. After supper a play, “ What Happened to Henry.” was acted, and a character sketch “We Saw the Sea,” was given. Maori songs and pois were contributed and songs by Mesdames Caldwell, Gillan, and Taiaroa. Two novelty dances were won by Miss Black and Mr Tibbet. Mr Macßeath ably carried out the duties of M.C., assisted by Mr Barnes. * * * The Milton Institute met on Friday afternoon, Mrs Gray presiding. The motto was, "Keep your face to the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind.” The roll call was “Women who made history.” Mrs M’Ncur took

Mrs Gray was first for premier bloom and Mrs Olver second. An exhibition of antique articles was held. The hostesses were Mesdames L. Kennard, Cullen, Leckie, M. Scott, and Whytock. The fifth birthday parly of the institute was held in St. John’s Hall. Mrs Gray presided. Miss Watt then presented Mrs Gray (president), Mrs Sinclair (vice-presi-dent), Mrs Hay (secretary), and Mrs Nimmo (treasurer) with shoulder sprays. The first part of the evening took the form of a concert. The cake, which was made by Mrs M. Scott, and iced by Mrs Gray, was piped into the hall. Mrs Gray lit the candles and Mrs T. Scott blew them out. Miss Drinnan cut the cake. -vAt an open social afternoon held by the Eveline Institute (Oamaru) Mrs Kilgoux presided. The motto was, “Life without friendship is like the sky without sun,” and the roll call, “ The new hall being uppermost in our mind.;.” Mrs Skirving gave a demonstration on “Picture-making with Tin Foil,” and a “Household Condiments” competition was won by Mrs C. Hedges. Duets were sung by Mesdames Sherwin and Harwood. Competitions resulted as follows: —Jam tart. Mrs Hedges 1; bowl of chrysanthemums —Miss Hartley 1. Mrs Fraser 2. Mrs Coutts 3.
