COUNTRY NEWS

CLYDE Domain Board The annual meeting of the Domain Board, held on Thursday evening, was attended by Messrs S. A. Stevens (in the chair), J. L. Davidson, F. Lindsay, J. Holt. P. Miller and W. A. Harlow. The secretary presented the annual report and statement of receipts and expenditure, both showing a satisfactory year's work. The present board's term of office of seven years having come to an end, a public meeting was held at the conclusion of the annual meeting, when a new board was elected, the personnel being Messrs S. A. Stevens, W. A. Harlow, W. Annan, J. L. Davidson, J. Holt, P. Miller, E. Wood, F. Lindsay and W. Gye. Mr W. A. Harlow was elected chairman, Mr Stevens declining the appointment. Mr Sinclair resigned the secretaryship and the appointing of his successor was left in the hands of the chairman. Messrs Stevens and Davidson. Messrs Stevens, Gye and Wood were authorised to Install see-saws on the children’s playground and attend to the swings, Messrs Davidson and Gye to inspect the fireplace on the camping area. It was decided to continue with the tree planting and remove some of the pines from the nursery, also to apply to the caretaker of the Queenstown Park for pine seedlings. It was decided to carry out the previous board’s decision to spend up to £lO on the hockey ground when required, to repair the fence in Coquet street, and also erect a gate at that point Into the park and form a path if labour is available. Mr S. A. Stevens was accorded a vote of thanks for his services to the board as chairman during the past seven years. Mr Sinclair also was thanked for his services as secretary. Hockey The Clyde hockey team, although beaten by Alexandra A on Saturday, put up a very creditable performance and had bad luck in losing by six goals to five. The Social Club, which commences Its card session on Thursday, will hand over any surplus to the Hockey Club. Weather The past week has been an unusually mild one with a strong breeze from the north-west on Sunday, County Council At the regular meeting of the council. held on Thursday, Mr James Ritchie was re-elected chairman for the seventeenth year in succession. The councillors had lunch with the Southland Young Farmers at the Earnscleugh Hall. Hospital Board A special meeting of the Vincent Hospital Board was held on Friday morning to meet the commission headed by Dr D. G. M’Millan, M.P,, when maternity services for the district were discussed.

RANFURLY Manlofoto Mounted Rifles A very successful reunion of the Maniototo Mounted Rifles was held in Ranfurly on May 29. The function took the form of a banquet dinner in the afternoon, followed by a dance in the evening. The banquet, at which Mr T. Dowling presided, was attended by over 100 ex-members and their friends, some of whom came from as far north as Timaru and south as far as Invercargill. Prominent among the visitors was Mr C. A. Hargest, M.P. The oldest member present was Mr John M’Leod and the oldest original officer Mr R. W, Trotter. The chairman kept the gathering Interested during the comprehensive toast list. The speeches made by Mr Hargest and Mr Trotter were of particular Interest on account of the references made to the early history of the Mounted Rifles. Reference wag also made to the success of the company since its foundation as ahown by the number of members who went to the Great War and made good officers and soldiers. The success of the afternoon was largely due to the assistance of Mrs Keegan, who played the accompaniments, and to Miss M. Beattie and Mr Canhan, who both rendered Items. Mr and Mrs Donald are also to be congratulated on the arrangements made for the catering of the banquet. The dance In the evening, although not as well attended as the committee expected, proved to be a great success. QUEENSTOWN Presentation An echo of the opening of the Queenstown-Klngston road was heard at the last meeting of the Lake County Council. During the progress of the meeting the chairman (Mr L. Lee) accepted at the hands of the councillors, on behalf of his wife, a small case, suitably inscribed, containing the pair of scissors which were used by Mrs Lee to cut the ribbon on the occasion of the opening of the road in April, 1936. Cr George Reid, who made the presentation, spoke in appreciation of the offices of Mr Lee and his wife on the auspicious occasion. He hoped that the gift would bring back happy recollections to Mrs Lee of the memorable event. Mr Lee thanked the council on behalf of his wife. Basketball Meeting The annual meeting of the Wakatipu Basketball Association was held in the school on May 25. Those present were Dr Anderson (chairman). Misses E. Gavin, M. Lynch, A. M’Soriley, J. Hansen, D. Harris, M. Inghs, and Mrs H. R. Eastlake (hon. secretary). The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed and the balance sheet read and adopted. Dr Anderson was re-elected president for the 1937' season and Mrs H. R. Eastlake was re-elected hon. secretary. It was arranged to start the matches on Wednesday, June 16. PALMERSTON Mayor Honoured The Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway) has been officially notified that he is a recioient of a King’s Coronation Medal. By some inadvertence, Mr Galloways name did not appear In the list published in the newspapers. Memorial Fund As the public meeting called In connection with the King George V Memorial Fund met with such a poor response, the committee has decided not to canvass the borough. However, it was decided to write to the Retailers’ Association, sports bodies, lodges, and other local organisations, asking for their co-operation by collecting from their- members. Other

persons wishing to subscribe should send their contributions to the secretary, Miss H. K. Challis, Box 6, Palmerston, before Thursday. A subscription of £2 2s is acknowledged from the W.D.F.U., and amounts of 10s from the Mayor and Mr W. C. Arkle. Gun Club On Saturday afternoon, In fine weather, a match, 12 birds’ handicap, was fired for prizes for ladies. Scores were as follows:—J. R. Roy, for Mrs Sutherland, 12; D. Ross, for Mrs Philip, 12; J. H. Roy, for Mrs Roy, 12, J. H. Roy, after a draw for ties, won a prize for himself. There were five other competitors. W. Sutherland and J. Roy each broke the possible, in a six-bird, gun below shoulder, match. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Rugby Football The annual match between Eastern Southland and Northern Southland for the Grant Cup was played at Balfour on Saturday before a large attendance of spectators. Northern had no difficulty in retaining the trophy, winning by 14 points (two field goals, an unconverted try and a penalty goal) to 3 (one unconverted try). The ground was very heavy, and consequently play was mostly confined to the forwards, in which department Northern excelled. The Northern forwards took the ball from the majority of set scrums and the Eastern backs had little opportunity. Golf The Gore Golf Club conducted a stroke match on the Croyden links on Saturday in fine weather. The greens were still heavy, and the scoring was very poor, with the exception of that of the winner. N. M’Creath, who played six under his handicap. The following were the best cards:—N. Basketball The Eastern Southland basketball competition matches were continued on Saturday in fine weather. Mataura proved too strong for High School, and won easily by 28 to 3. Ex-High and M’Kenzie’s had a close game, which was won by the former by 8 to 5, Smith’s beat Albion by 13 to 9. Claim for Damages A sequel to a bush fire at Waimumu In October, 1936, was heard at a special sitting of the Gore Magistrate’s Court before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., when John Henry Perry, a farmer, of Waimumu, claimed £239 Os 6d from Copland Bros., runholders, of Waimumu, for the destruction of buildings and property alleged to have been caused by fires lit by the defendants. Mr R. B. Bannerman, of Gore, appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr J. Tait, of Invercargill, appeared for the defendants. The defendants admitted having lit fires on their property on the day the damage was caused, but maintained that the fire which swept through the plaintiff’s property was not caused by them. The magistrate gave his decision In favour of the plaintiff, and suggested that counsel should discuss the question of damages and come to an agreement. BALCLUTHA Personal Mr C. J. Wood, of Balclutha, well known In connection with local ambulance work, has been notified of his admission as a service brother of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. _ Miss Joan Farquharson has had a similar honour conferred upon her. The diplomas will be presented to them by his Excellency the Governor-General Rugby Football The following referees have been appointed for Saturday:—First Grade; Clutha v.
