STEAMERS TO BE SCRAPPED
WELL-KNOWN COASTAL VESSELS LAST LINKS WITH OLD SERVICE (Special ro Dau,v Times» AUCKLAND, May 31. After dragging out their last few years afloat in the rusty shipping graveyard of “ Rotten Row,” two of New Zealand’s best-known coastal steamers, the Rarawa and the Ngapuhi, will shortly be scrapped. This decision, which will sever the last links with the former thriving Onehunga-New Plymouth passenger service, was announced by Sir Ernest Davis chairman of directors, at the annual meeting of the Northern Steamship Company Built specially for the west coast passenger service, the Rarawa and the Ngapuhi gained splendid tradition for their work on the tempestuous Tasman, and for more than 30 years they provided the principal means of communication between Auckland and Taranaki. The Rarawa, a twin-screw steamer of 1077 tons, was built in Dundee in 1903 by Gourlay Bros. She has been moored in “ Rotten Row since 1929. The Ngapuhi, a steamer of 703 tons, was; buidt in Dundee in 1900, and was taken out of commission in 1930.
