THE Otago Daily Times. " Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, THURSDAY, MAY 31, 1866.

i SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The •' Tuapeka Press" of Saturday says:—" We yesterday inspected the coal mine lately opened by Messrs M'Coll, Hay and Co.. near Mr Robertson's farm. As yet they are not in a position to supply the public, although two or three loads were carried away for consumption on Thursday last. To all appearance, an extensive deposit of valuable lignite has been discovered. The-depth from the surface is about 26 feet, and it is wrought by a tunnel GJ feet high by 5 feet wide. . . . We are glad to be able to state that the existence of lignite in sufficient quantity amply to repay the cost of opening up the mine is now placed beyond a doubt, and we look forward to see the enterprising lessees speedily reimbursed." Loyalty does not appear to be popular with the Volunteer Corps at Wellington. The "Advertiser" of the 25th says:—"At the time appointed for mustering the Volunteers who were to have formed a guard of honor at the Governor's levee, yesterday, only eleven members appeared upon the ground, and as it was necessary to have at least sixteen, those who appeared were dismissed, and uo guard of honor was supplied. This is not the way to keep up esprit de corps, and demonstrate their loyalty to Her Majesty's Representative. But, perhaps, there were other inducements too 'great for this martial few, in the bright sunshine, the holiday, and the chance of a picnic in some quiet country nook. During the month of April 56 sections of rural land, measuring 5921 acres, were sold to 37 purchasers. The amount realised was L 6119 3s 9d.

The Dunedin Water Works Company have commenced laying the mains in George-street, near the Octagon, and already a considerable length of pipes is laid down. Provision is made for fire plugs at every cross street. Mr Begg. the Curator of the Botanic Gardens, has received from Doctor Mueller, of Melbourne, seventy varieties of roses, most of them new to the Colony. The damp weather of the last few days has revealed who do and who do not attend to the requirements of the bye-laws by sweeping the footpaths in front of their premises. In Princes street, the slippery mud in front of several shops indicates that a visit from Inspector Nimon would be a public service, and the Corporation would do well to set a good example by causing the crossings of the streets to be swept daily.
