WRESTLING

SPELLMAN VERSUS BLOMFIELD John Spellman, who is to meet "Lofty" Blomfield in the professional wrestling contest at the Dunedin Town Hall to-night, has the distinction of having coached wrestlers before ever he joined the ranks of the professionals. This was during the four years that followed his return from the Olympic Games at Paris in 1924, when he won the title in the 1921 b class, a special division between heavy-weight and light heavy-weight. Spellman returned to his university, where he had received lessons at the hands of Frank Herrick. one of America's most famous wrestling tutors. In

order to make the weight limit, at Paris he had to reduce heavily, and consequently, when he resumed a natural diet, he quickly jumped up to a fully-developed heavy-weight. He joined the cash ranks in 1928, and since then has had hundreds of matches in the eastern States, as well as in other parts of Amerjcg and Canada. Spellman is a tough wrestler of the Koloff type and will be seen to the best advantage against another rugged performer such as Blomfield. The latter held Spellman, to a draw in their previous match and is confident that he will be able, to do better next time. His past record against visiting matmen indicates that his confidence is justified, but the local public are bound to enjoy plenty of excitement while it is being put to the test. The clash will be particularly thrilling because of the fighting qualities of the contestants and the rugged measures they employ to achieve their ends. There will be ability above the average on both sides in the use of the elbow jolt, Spellman will be looking for chances to employ his flying tackles, and Blomfield will be angling for his octopus clamp. Further particulars are advertised.
