MEMBERS' SALARIES
THE PROPOSED INCREASE STATEMENT BY MR BALDWIN (British Official Wireless) RUGB"i, May 27. As his last announcement in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister informed the House of the Government's decision regarding members' salaries. He said: "In accordance with the undertaking I gave on April 7, I have made further inquiries into the question of whether or not the salaries of members of Parliament should be increased. The existing figure of £4OO was fixed in 1911. It is, I think, obvious that if £4OO was adequate in the circumstances then existing, it cannot be so regarded in the very different conditions which prevail to-day. After careful consideration, the Government has decided to propose that the figure should be increased to £6OO, and the necessary steps to accomplish this will be taken a 4, an early date."
