MACANDREW BAY
OPENING NIGHT OF ORPHANS' CLUB The large and enthusiastic gathering at the opening night of the Macandrew Bay Orphans' Club, which was held in the Public Hall on Wednesday evening, augurs well for the success of the club during the year. An enjoyable evening was spent in true Orphan spirit—in song, mirth, and melody. Orchestral numbers were supplied by Begg's Orchestra, under the baton of Mr A. Pettitt, while songs of a high standard were presented by Mr M. F. Ford and Mr M'Donald, and character songs of a humorous nature by Mr Fred White. Banjo solos were given by Bro. R. T. Harrington, and a recitation by Bro. J. Vivian. The president (Bro. G. F. Bewley), in his opening remarks, extended a cordial welcome to visitors and new members, and expressed gratification at the presence in the club of Mr Trevena, of the Dunedin Orphans' Club, Lieutenant-colonel J. M'Pherson, and numerous others.
Twenty-five nominations for membership were received and accepted by the club, and before the evening closed this number was increased to 30. Those.who presented themselves for initiation were: Eros: F. E. Mitchell, J. H. Pledger, H. E. Wills, J. G. Woodhouse, H. M. Kellas, T. Rennie, R. T. Harrington, C. J. Macandrew, J. H. Graham, D. Paviour-Smith, R. L. Kellett. A. M'Neill, J. Niven, J. M. Coutts, D. W. V. Backers. W. J. Wilson, and W. Crowther.
Bro. S. Raffills proposed the toast of "The Visitors," and expressed the hope that he would soon be in a position to address them as brother Orphans. Lieutenant-colonel M'Pherson and Mr D. Morris, in replying, eulogised the club and its activities. Bro. J. Vivian, in proposing the toast of "Kindred Clubs," expressed pleasure at the presence of Mr Trevena. of tbe Dunedin Orphans' Club. Mr Trevena gave the club an interesting address on the objects of Orphandom, and congratulated the club on the outstanding success of its opening function. Bro. A. Hartley, in proposing the toast of "The Performers." thanked them for their willing assistance to the club, and expressed the club's appreciation of the talented performances given. Messrs A. Pettitt, M. F. Ford, and Fred White replied.
