Two years ago a German elepliant arriving in Goole dock frdrn Hamburg stepped into a waiting railway van—and went through the :'floor. Last month the same elephant arrived with three companions. He has been going in and out of railway vhns all over Europe during the past itwo years—but he wouldn’t risk walking into a van at Goole. Trainers apd dock staff coaxed, bullied, used fodder as bait inside the van—all in vjain. After a flve-hoUr battle of wits jthey chained him to one of his companions, used bait, and cheered as he was dragged into the van. ;
