There are altogether 172 entries—6B different competitors—including visitors from Invercargill, Gore, Balclutha, Central, Temuka, and Christchurch. Practically all the local clubs have good representation. Mrs W. Cole, who won the Southland Singles Championship and was runnerup in the Ladies’ Singles at the Dominion tourney, has entered. Mr J. Tannock, winner of the English Gold Medal, and who as a result of this success has been reduced to scratch, will also be a competitor in all A Grade events. The tournament will be opened at the Logan Park lawns by the president, Mrs J. G. H. Briggs, at 9.30 this morning. For the first few days it will be necessary to use Watea lawns as well as the seven at Logan Park. Mrs J. M’Donald is tournament manager and Mrs J. Nisbet assistant. Mrs T. Cornish is in charge of the cafeteria where morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea will be available. The referee is Mrs W. M. Cole, and the following have been appointed umpires:—Mesdames W. Cole, Buchler, Anderson, Halliday, and Christopher, and Messrs J. Nichol and J. Tannock. The following matches will be commenced as soon as the opening ceremony is over. SOUTHLAND TOURNEY The weather was unkind for the Southland tourney, making the play far from pleasant, and slowing up the games. There .were many stoppages on account of heavy showers, and the last event was finished on Tuesday. Mrs Cole (Opoho) sprang rather a surprise on the Southlanders by winning the Open Championship Singles. Commenting on this event, the Mataura Ensign says:— The most outstanding performance in the Championship Singles was the defeat of the Dominion ladies’ champion, Mrs W. N. Corbet (Invercargill) by Mrs G. M’Leod, in the second section. As Mrs Corbet had also been beaten in the first section by Mrs M’Leod, she was eliminated from the Singles. The Gore player was in splendid form. She made two perfect rounds and gave her opponent practically no chance. Mrs Corbet was allowed a few long shots only. Throughout the tournament Mrs M’Leod has played brilliantly and is regarded as the most likely winner of the championship, having both lives intact. The only other player with two lives is Mrs A. B. Caverhill, who has also shown splendid form, including an impressive victory over R. W. M’Creath. That, however, was as far as Mrs M’Leod got. Meeting Mrs Cole in the final of the first life, she lost 26—17, and went out of the second life, being beaten by R. W. M’Creath. Mrs Caverhill has two successive wins in the second life, first defeating Mrs Christopher 26—1, then accounting for R. W. M’Creath 26—0. This brought Mrs Cole and Mrs Caverhill, each having one life, to play off two games out of three for the final. Two games only were necessary, Mrs Cole winning 26—23 and 26—13. With Mr J. Nichol, Mrs Cole was runner-up in the Championship Doubles. Congratulations to the Opoho players on the honours won lor themselves and Otago. CENTRAL NOTES NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL CUP MATCH The second match in the New Zealand Council Cup match series was played on Wednesday, when Cromwell played Clyde, at Clyde. In the morning ideal weather prevailed, but soon after dinner a thunderstorm broke over the town, and play had to be stopped for some time. On resuming later in the day the conditions were not pleasant, nevertheless the games were keenly contested and thoroughly enjoyed. Cromwell won four games and Clyde two top Singles. The following are details of scores:— Mesdames George and Davis 16, Mesdames Jelley and Mitchell 26; Mesdames Hanning and Woods 12, Mesdames Hardy and Gordon 26. Mrs George 26, Mrs Jelley 17; Mrs Davis 26, Mrs Mitchell 24; Mrs Hanning 21, Mrs Hardy 26; Mrs Woods 6, Mrs Gordon 20. Totals: Cromwell 4, Clyde 2. PERSONAL Members of the Logan Park Club gathered at the pavilion on Saturday to bid farewell to their ex-president, Mrs Squires, who will leave shortly on an extended trip abroad. The weather was not suitable for outside games, but a happy time was spent in the pavilion, which was tastefully decorated (or the occasion. Afternoon tea was served, after which Mrs C. Stanley Smith referred to their guest's excellent work for (ho chib, particularly during her term of presidency. Presenting Mrs Squires with a gift for use during her travels, Mrs Smith expressed, on behalf of the members, best wishes for a happy holiday. Mrs Squires was also handed a bouquet lied with streamers in the club’s colours. Replying, Mrs Squires said she did not require any gifts to remind her of her clubmatcs. However, she thanked one and all for their good wishes, and assured them she would frequently have in mind many happy days spent at the Logan Park lawns. A jolly party closed with singing “For She's a Jolly Good Fellow.”
