TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel A Wellington Winner Black Marble, a five-year-old black mare by Nelson Derby from Grattan Darby, is owned by Mr J, Bell, and trained at New Brighton by L. Davidson. Grattan Derby, by Huia Dillon— Muriel Derby, by Mauritius (son of Bingen) from Lottie Derby (imp.), is also the dam of Homeward. 2mm 9 4-ssec. Shapes Like a Stayer Dark Hazard, a three-year-old bay gelding bred in Southland by Mr M. W. Pierce, is raced on lease by M. C. M’Tigue of Methven. Dark Hazard is by Great Bingen (4min 19 2-ssec) from Wild Nita, a member of the same family as Logan Chief, Native Chief, Grand Mogul, Southern Smile, etc. He shapes like a stayer, but may need time. Donald Dhu Donald Dhu. a three-year-old black gelding by Man-o’-War from Tracey Maid is nowned by Mr A. M'Leod, and trained by L, A. Maidens. Donald Dhu holds the distinction of having beaten the Champion Stakes winner Toorak in his maiden success. Splint Trouble Blue Mountain is suffering a recurrence of splint trouble, and could not fulfil his engagements at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting. A Promising Pacer Aide de Camp was the most promising of the middle-class pacers seen at Wellington, and he will go on to wm races in good company. Wants to Pace Swordsman is a handsome colt,- but he will take time to become reliable at the trotting gait. He wants to pace, and it is perhaps only a question of time when he will be allowed to race in hopples. Racing Consistently Vanity Fair is racing consistently, and she looks like v/inning a race. She got away well at Hutt Park on Thursday, and finished a creditable third after being in the thick of the fight all the way. Early Win Probable ' Santa Fe has the makings of a successful performer. She ran third in both races at Wellington on Thursday, and is certain to enter the winning list in the near future. She is by Wrack from Nell Pointer, and is a full-sister to Tempest. She was turned out in excellent condition at Hutt Park by G. Stuart, who is now private trainer to Durbar . Lodge, Ltd. May Pay-to Follow ' Making his first appearance for some time, Ringtrue went a useful race in the Premier Handicap on the second day of the Auckland summer meeting. He never threatened to take part in the decision, but was not far away from the placed horses at the post. Ringtrue gave promise of developing into a tip-top performer, but his last few efforts have been a trifle disappointing. However, he has not been over-raced, and with a few runs in public he may yet atone for some of his early failures. Ringtrue has done a light season at stud duty, and the effort of Axminster at the matinee meeting augurs well for the future of the highly-bred son of Travis Axworthy and Bertha Bell as a sire.

Working Brilliantly Star Pronto continues to work brilliantly at Epsom, and the Australianbred pacer is in excellent order to contest the chief events at the Auckland meeting, which opens at Epsom on Saturday. His effort recently in running the last half-mile of a mile and a-half in Imin 3sec was accomplished in effortless style, and it is hard to cay just how fast this horse could really go.' However, he is not solid, and frequently spoils his chances by breaking. The class competing in the big races at Epsom is fairly strong, but should Star Pronto be on his best behaviour he is sure to prove a source of trouble to the opposition.
