SCUFFLE ON STEAMER

MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED

ASSAILANT BEFORE COURT (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 6. Serious head injuries were suffered by Edward Curtis, a married man, aged 60, when he fell 10 feet down the hold during a scuffle aboard the ship Port Townsville last evening. The incident had its sequel in the Police Court this morning, when James Francis Loftus, a fireman, aged 40, limped into the dock to face a charge of common assault. On the application of Detective Sergeant M'Hugh, the charge was amended to one that, with intent to do grievous bodily harm to Curtis, he did actual bodily harm.

The accused was remanded until February 8. Asking for bail, Mr Singer, who appeared for the accused, said that Loftus had suffered injury and required immediate attention. Detective Sergeant M'Hugh said that Curtis was in a very serious condition, and Loftus could get all the attention he needed in gaol. Bail was refused.
