AMATEUR ATHLETICS

BRILLIANT MILE BY PULLAR SHORT LIMIT HANDICAP MEETING Conditions for the second of the short limit handicap meetings conducted by the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association on Saturday were highly favourable. There was practically no wind in the early half of the afternoon, and the track was in first-class order. Later, there was a slight breeze which probably had an adverse effect on the attempt on the half-mile track record by T. Allen. ;,v

The feature of the afternoon was the sensational mile by W. A. C. Pullar, whose time of 4min 18sec is the fastest ever recorded on the Caledonian track and is the second fastest recorded in the Dominion by a local runner. The record for a New Zealand runner is held by Randolph Rose, who put up the time of 4min 13 4-Elsec some 10 years ago. Pullar was in excellent condition and ran a perfectlyjudged race, as is indicated by his lap times of 63sec, 66sec, 64sec, and 63sec. A sharp pace was set over the early laps by K. Broad and G. Austin, and in the last round Pullar and A. R. Geddes off 50yds, fought the race out to a most exciting finish, Pullar breasting the tape less than a foot in front. The time recorded can hardly be called into question since the race was clocked by four watches. T. Allen'made ah attempt to break the Imin 57sec record for the halfmile, but fell short, his time being 2min 3-ssec. His judgment was slightly at fault in taking the first lap too fast, the time being 55sec, and the slight breeze which had risen also weighed against his chances. An exhibition of hammer throwing was given by J. Anderson, his best throw being 113 feet. The programme was composed of A and B Grade events on track and field, and several cycling events were also conducted. The standard of performance all round was good, and particular attention was paid to the form of the cyclists in view of the forthcoming championships. The following are the results: — A GRADE 100 YARDS J. M'Lachlan (C.S.), 4Jyds 1 C. M'Gregor (Ang.), 4yds 2 H. D. Ramsay (An?.), Ijyds 3 Time, 10 l-ssec. Six starters. Broad (70yds) and Austin (65yds) set the pace over the first half, but at halfway Geddes (50yds) and Craig (30yds) had crept up to within striking distance, with Pullar (scr) running a little'behind. At the commencement of the last lap Geddes was just behind the leaders, with Pullar close behind. Halfway round the track Geddes went, to-the lead, but he was immediately, passed by Pullar, who was running with remarkable ease despite the speed set in the previous rounds. Geddes pul; in a challenge at the foot of the straight, and with Pullar ran heck and neck at a very fast sprint, Pullar .just pushing ahead to breast the tape with a lead of a lew inches. Craig in third place was abbut 15 yards back. K.'fwm SHOT PUTT ■ : F. Wheeler (C.S,), lOin, 39ft ';■ -W -7 Jin ■ . 1 P. Souter (Ang:), 10m, 38ft •• Toln ■ V... ’2 J.
