ENGINEER DROWNED FALL FROM FISHING VESSEL (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 6. George Wallace Barker, engineer of the fishing vessel Maud E, fell overboard as he was making his way forward along the deck of the boat off Cape Colville on Thursday afternoon. When his absence was noticed half an hour later, the Maude E was put back and a search made, but without success.

STRUCK BY MOTOR CAR MAN FATALLY INJURED (Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON N., Feb. 6. William Sykes, the elderly man who was severely injured when struck by a motor car which mounted a footpath on Wednesday, died in the hospital this morning. The car was out of control and jammed him against a wall. LEVEL CROSSING SMASH STOCK AGENT KILLED (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 7. Geoffrey Kear Hawkins, single, aged 27, of Ashley street, Rangiora, died in the Christchurch Hospital this morning from severe head injuries received shortly after midnight in a level crossing accident at Rangiora. Hawkins, who was a stock agent for Messrs H. Matson and Co., at Rangiora, was travelling in an easterly direction down High street and drove over the crossing into a passing train. Hawkins was found 12 yards from the point of impact. The crossing signal bell was ringing at the time of the accident.

FOUND HANGING

A YOUNG WOMAN'S DEATH (Per United Press Association) TIMARU, Feb. 6. A distressing tragedy was revealed this morning when Mrs A. E. Cowley entered the porch of her home in Selwyn street to find her sister, Mrs Rita Gillett, aged 27, hanging by a cord from the ceiling. The young woman was dead, and a chair was close by. The deceased had been in a precarious state of health since the birth of a child seven weeks ago.

SCHOOL TEACHER’S DEATH Frederick Charles Graham, aged 32 years, married, a school teacher at Waikaka Valley, was found dead at 7.15 on Saturday night in a loose box on the property of his uncle, Mr C. White, at Omakau. There was a bullet wound in the head and a rifle lay beside the body. Graham, who was on holiday at Omakau. was called for tea at 6 o’clock, and when he did not appear a search was made,, with Ihe result that his body was found in the loose box. HAND BADLY LACERATED Thomas Simpson, aged 57 years, residing at 112 Albany street, had a hand badly lacerated when it became caught in an electric mixing machine at Wright’s bakery, where he was employed. Ho was admitted to the Hospital at 7.30 a.m. on Saturday.

SMALL GIRL INJURED Through falling clown a bank at Harrington Point yesterday afternoon. Maureen James, six years of age, living at 28 Edgar street, Dunedin, received a head injury, and was admitted to the Hospital at 4 p.m.
