Experiments fori a reduction of the wheel on rail no|se are now reported to be complete, i ind all rail sections on 440 track nj iles of the system and all plannij d extensions are to be welded b)r a special process. The final solutio) i of the second half of the noise prob lem, that of absorbing as much as j )ossible of the noise that is producejt, has not yet been reached. Experiments have been made in a section of the tube with asbestos and composition mattresses raised to the he) ght of the floor of a trsin along the '.tunnel walls. For t number of reasons, however they have been found unsatisfactory for general purposes and experiments with other mats rials are to be continued. ':
