DUNEDIN MARKETS

WHEAT, OATS, ETC. Harvesting is in full swing in the Canterbury district, and the wheat is now available in the northern province. Harvesting is also being carried out in the Central Otago districts, and the quality of the wheat is excellent. At this time of the year millers are anxious to secure new wheat for mixing with their stocks of old wheat. It is too early yet to say definitely how the new season’s crops will turn out, but they will certainly show a decrease in the aggregate as compared with the last season’s returns. The wheat crops throughout Otago and Southland are looking well, and the spell of fine weather now being experienced is just what was needed to’ bring them to maturity. The crops in the southern districts will, nevertheless, be late, and it will be a week or two yet before harvesting is general in Otago and Southland. The fowl wheat market remains unchanged, with prices ranging from 5s 3d to 5s 6d per bushel, sacks extra, ex store. Flour: 200’s, £l3 15s 6d; 100’s, £l4 12s 6d: 50’s, £l4 17s 6d; 25's, £ls 7s 6d. Bran, £5 5s per ton. Pollard, £6 15s per ton. Oatmeal: 2001 b sacks, £22; 25’s, £24, Threshing of oats from the stook is fairly general in Canterbury, particularly of the Algerian and Dun variety. The returns so far have been good, boih as to the quantity and the quality of the oats. Stocks of old oats are practically sold out, and the new season’s will come to a bare market. The opening prices are 3s 8d to 3s 9d per bushel, f.0.b., s.i., for A Cartons and 3s 6d for B’s. These prices are equivalent to 3s and 2s lOd respectively, on trucks, country sidings, sacks extra. The chaff market is unchanged. Supplies are equal to the demand, which is not over-brisk. Reports from Canterbury state that record yields of potatoes are expected there this season. Reports from South Otago, on the other hand, state that the yields will be considerably lower than last year owing to blight and flood damage. The position should, however, be improved given fine weather conditions from now onwards. The first samples of cocksfoot seed that have reached the market have been disappointing, so far as quality is concerned. This is the result of the seed having been threshed before it was properly matured. Latest samples are expected to turn out better. Reports as to the position of the Akaroa crops vary, but the 'general opinion is that the yields will be slightly less than those of last year. In other northern districts average yields are anticipated. Disappoiftting reports are being received regarding the ryegrass crops in Canterbury, particularly certified seed, the demand for which is ever increasing. Samples of Otago-grown ryegrass are expected shortly. The threshing of Chewing’s fescue has commenced, but there have been no sales recorded so far, and it is, therefore, impossible to name values.

New season's apples are realising good values. The suoply, mainly from Nelson and Central Otago. is hardly equal to the demand. The tomato market remains firm. Hothouse-grown are arriving from North Otago and outside-grown from Christchurch. The Christchurch tomatoes are mostly of poor quality. Greengages are now on oner. High prices are being obtained in the north for Central Otago-grown greengages. As a matter of fact, there is a good inquiry in the north for all varieties of stone fruit. Many lines are going as far north as Auckland. The cold nights in the Central are enabling growers to pack their fruit on the firm side, thus ensuring their delivery in the northern towns in a good condition.

Moorpark apricots are In keen demand. The season will shortly be finished. Cherries are finished for the season. Choice quality Hale's peaches have been bringing good prices. The Wiggins and Triumph varieties are offering at lower rates. Bon Chretien pears are now on offer from Central Otago. Oranges are in short supply, and there is no information regarding further consignments. Transhipments of bananas ex the Matua came to hand during the week. The Maui Pomare is due in Lyttelton on Monday with a full shipment of Niue and Samoan bananas on board, the Dunedin portion being expected on the following day. Raspberries are practically finished for the season. Locally-grown hothouse grapes are now appearing on the market. French and runner beans are more plentiful, and prices have eased a little.
