LET'S HAVE A BONFIRE

Have you ever thought of, turning out the special box you keep in the bottom of your wardrobe and having a good burn-up of all the old programmes, letters, and everything else that has been accumulating there for so long? It sounds callous, I know, but, honestly, how many times have you re-read those letters that are stored so carefully away or referred to those programmes that you felt you must keep (says a writer in Home Chat)? And as for all those other things, those little mementoes of happy times, how often have they come as a surprise to you when you reopened the box? I know the sight of that box in the wardrobe gives you a nice warm feeling; when you see it there, but get rid of the box and store the things in your memory and you will find they have an even greater charm. I've tried it and I know. And what about those other unburnable things that you save because they will probably come in useful? Those few tiles left from the kitchen sink, the huge nail you found on the road, that extra picture hook? A queer assortment, I know, and as you say, they might be wanted one day. Why not try this plan? Keep them for a year and if a use has not turned up for them during that time, throw them away. There are other things to burn besides those you can see. All the little worries at the back of your mind—the niggling ones that you know are so silly. Burn them, too. It will be time to think about them when they are inside your front door and not now, when they are walking down the road and will probably pass your door.
