THE MIDSUMMER MEETING

The racing at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Midsummer meeting will be more than usually interesting owing to the large number of horses engaged who are booked to come on for the Dunedin Cup meeting. The field for the Midsummer Handicap will act as a most interesting dress, rehearsal for the Dunedin Cup, as no fewer than seven horses also figure in the principal event to be decided at Wingatui. Argentic, who is topweight in the Midsummer Handicap, displayed good form at the Wellington Cup meeting, where he ran second to Sunee in the W.R.C. Handicap when giving 231 b to the winner. Queen of Song, Davolo and Tun■neller were amongst the unplaced lot. Queen of Song displayed better form in the Summer Handicap by a fourth to Martara, Shy and Dungarvan. Vintage and Tunneller were unplaced. Tunneller did not repeat the form he displayed in the Wellington Cup, and gave trouble at the barrier in his subsequent engagements. Davolo did not repeat his form at the holiday, and in fact never emerged from the ruck, which suggests that his form was too bad to be true. Wild Chase is galloping well, and his win in the Riccarton Handicap with 9.3 in lmin 54 l-ssec New Zealand Derby and Canterbury Cup suggests that a mile and a-half is not beyond his distance Palady and the others may have an outside chance The following may be fancied for their engagements:— Hornby Brush Hurdles.—Polydora, Santoft.
