Not until the eleventh'.century did the fashion of wearing gloves spread to Europe. It was introduced by the daughter of the Emperor of Constantinople when she became the wife of the Doge of Venice. Sha always wore in public gloves scented with aromatic herbs. Fashionable Italians copied the style, which later was adopted in France 'and Spain. In France the glove industry was established at Niort in 1277. More than a century later the glovers of Perth formed a company.
