BETTING CHARGES

A BUTCHER FINED (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb, 4. Vincenzo Serci, aged 29, a butcher at Island Bay, was charged with keeping a common gaming house and with accepting totalisator odds on 10 occasions between January 19 and 30.

Evidence was submitted of police visits to the place and of bets being taken. A plea of guilty was entered to the betting charges and not guilty to that of keeping a common gaming house. After consideration by the court of the defendant’s financial resources, he was fined £4O and costs on the charge of keeping a common gaming house, £lO and costs on one of the betting charges, and was convicted and ordered to pay costs on the other nine betting charges. Fourteen days were allowed in which to pay the fines.
