The reception and ball given by the New. Zealand Group of the Royal Empire Society on December 18 was one of the first of these pleasant functions to be held in the new premises in Northumberland street. Sir Archibald Weigall (chairman of the society s council), Lady Weigall, Mr W. J. Jordan (High Commissioner) and Mrs Jordan received the guests. Only an hour or so before the ball began the High Commissioner returned to London from Geneva, where he had been attending a session of the Council of the League o f Nations. These functions are always a pleasant means of bringing New Zealanders together for a few hours from all parts of the city, and are invariably well attended. On this occasion the guests included Mr Walter Nash, Minister of Finance and Marketing, and members of his staff, who were taking a few hours of wellearned relaxation. The society’s ballroom. which may also be used as a reception hall and lecture room, makes an attractive setting for dancing, and its balcony is popular with those who wish rather to watch the dancing than to participate as the evening proceeds.

A beautiful pink -pearl necklace, the property of an anonymous person, was withdrawn from sale at Christie’s, London, on December 14, when no advance was made on an offer of £6BOO. One of the outstanding dealers in the jewel market summed up the matter thus: “ Every man in the trade is well aware that this pearl necklace is worth £IO,OOO at least, despite the decline of values since people began to buy the cultured imitations. But we are still waiting for private buyers to come along and tell us that they are at last ready to purchase the real article. In the meantime some of us prefer to lay out our capital in diamonds and emeralds. which have a quick sale, instead of locking up our money in pearls, however tempting.” The present-day preference for emeralds and diamonds was shown when a ring with a single octagonal emerald realised £540 and when £1220 was naid for a necklace Ox 45 diamonds. Moreover, £9OO was given for a single-stone diamond ring. £6OO for an emerald and diamond brooch, and £550 for a pair of diamond earrings.

A New Zealander at present in London writes as follows: —"We have taken to standing outside 145 Piccadilly to watch the King coming home to lunch. From so much observation we have decided how it must be arranged. Apparently they telephone from the palace when the King leaves there to a policeman on duty at the Wellington Arch; he warns the men at Hyde Park Corner and outside the house itself. A few minutes later a

car conies sweeping through Green Park, switching on its lights for a second to warn the man on point duty. He holds up the entire mass of traffic at the corner—about 12 lines of it—and the King’s car goes slowly round and turns into No. 145, through the small crowd which has collected. Ho sometimes waves; the door is opened by a red-coated footman, and in goes the King.”
