Miners working at Rotowarq, at a depth of 150 ft in one of the mines of Taupiri Coal Mines, Ltd., recently found a strange piece of coal, and that piece is now in the Auckland War Memorial Museum. It was a section of fossilised timber, some 9in long and 4in wide. It is a piece of a small branch of a tree, but so perfect has been the preservation that many of the markings of the original wooden branch have been retained, while it is possible practically to seo +he bark.
