CORNWELL CUP
TWO RACES DECIDED BOISTEROUS CONDITIONS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. In the re-sail of the first race for the Cornwell Cup, held yesterday afternoon in a light northerly, Paremata was first over the line, followed closely by Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington, with Hamilton, Manukau, Tauranga, Plimmerton and Lyttelton following. Auckland soon established a lead, which it maintained to the finish, although on the final run home the breeze fell away considerably, and Christchurch, Tauranga and Plimmerton closed the gap considerably. Auckland’s finishing time was 4 hours 31 minutes 25 seconds, with Christchurch 30 seconds later and Tauranga 8 seconds further back.
The second race was started at 10.30 this morning in a fresh northeasterly breeze and steady rain. Lyttelton came up to the starting line, but dropped out at the last moment through a mishap to the gaff. The other boats got away to an excellent start. Auckland was first across the line, followed closely by Christchurch, Manukau, Tauranga, Plimmerton, Whangarei, Paremata, Hamilton and Wellington. As the race progressed over a triangular course the wind and rain increased considerably. Plimmerton, when leading, carried away, leaving Tauranga in the lead, but the Tauranga boat capsized, and. though it was righted three times, the crew was unable to unship the water. Christchurch won easily, followed some minutes later by Hamilton, with the remaining boats well back. Manukau capsized, as also did Paremata, the latter just a short distance from the finish. The weather was too rough for a further race to-day.
