KEENLY CONTESTED GAMES BEST AND FOSTER STILL UNBEATEN (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. The rain which set in to-day upset the programme for the Singles Only two rounds were completed and some competitors became very wet in contesting their second games To-day’s play was productive of some spirited contests in the early games, and several fancied candidates were defeated, notably last year’s winner, Livingstone (Qnehunga) and M. Walker (Auckland) while Carswell lost a life to W Bennett (Upper Hutt). Best and Foster are still unbeaten, the latter having the bye in the second round. The 1935 champion Engelbretsen is playing well and still has a life, while Brackenridge is going well. Haworth, who won both the pairs and the rinks last year, was one of Best’s victims, and the game attracted a gathering of enthusiasts Carswell’s two games were also closely followed. In the latter stages of his meeting with Bennett the green was wet and slippery, and the Taieri player did not seem at all comfortable. He was continually short, a fault of which his opponent made full use, inflicting a defeat on the ex-champion by six points.

Foster’s game with Dickinson, of Avon (Stratford) was a good effort. His opponent was drawing splendidly and seemed to have the Caledonian man’s measure, but Foster then resorted to firm play, and saved several heads when the situation was all against him. He deserved his win, and is drawn to meet Carswell’s victor (Bennett) when play is resumed. Dowland (St. Hilda) had two good wins, and he is down to meet Brackenridge in his next outing. At this stage there are four two-lifers—-Best, Foster, Bennett, and Evans (Hamilton), Evans’s draw plav is of a high order There are 22 left in with one loss, and among these are several with the ability to win the rest of their matches, notably Bremner, who has yet to win the Singles. The play to-morrow, weather permitting, will be four rounds of pairs, an extra round being put on in an endeavour to make up for the time lost and the consequent dislocation of the programme. Two hundred and fifty-six pairs have entered, and there are 38 sections on 16 greens. The Singles will now be held up until an opportunity occurs as pairs are weeded out, and it is possible that a few matches may be completed on Thursday afternoon. The weather outlook at 7 p.m. was not promising, and the forecast is against fine weather. DRAW FOR THIRD ROUND (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. The next round of Singles will be as follows: Two Lifers.—Evans v. Best. Bennett v Foster. One Lifers.—Dickinson v. Stephenson. Spearman v. Loveridge. Haworth v. Carswell, Bremner v. Hampton, Hadwin v. Brooke. Dempster v. Field, Batchelor v. Mingins. Engelbretscn v. Firth, Dowland v. Brackenridge, Drummond v. Thomas, Smith v. M'Cormick.
