PHYSICAL EDUCATION

MONTHLY MEETING OF SOCIETY The monthly meeting of the Physical Education Society was held on Saturday evening, with the president, Mr A. P. Roydhouse. in the chair. Lengthy correspondence was read and dealt with from the Physical Education Society. Auckland; the Wellington Association of Physical Trainers: and the Canterbury Association of Physical Education, dealing with the formation of the Physical Education Society of New Zealand. It was pointed out by the president that the other centres were falling into line with the suggestions put forward by the Otago society, and the way seemed clear now to proceed with the formation of the New Zealand body. Miss M. H. King, M.A., principal of the Otago Girls' High School, was the speaker of the evening, and delivered a most arresting and thought-provok-ing address, which was listened to with the greatest interest by thosa present. Miss King stated that it was her opinion that the masses of the people appeared to have reached a stage in their development where they were struggling to be free and to advance to further stages. We could only express ourselves fully by freedom, stated Miss King, and it was one of the privileges of the physical educators to help to prepare the individual to make proper use of that freedom. The speaker stressed the great possibilities there were in physical education gradually to build up the powers of control, to educate the body and the mind symmetrically, to cultivate beauty, grace, rhythm, and harmony, and so help in preparing the individual to join in the great symphony of life, and to express his individuality in a harmonious and beautiful theme. Miss Brewer moved a very hearty vote of thanks to Miss King for her address. She stated that, to those who were young in the work, it was most inspiring. Mr Northey seconded the motion, and stated thai he had never. in all his years of experience, listened to such an unusual address, and he felt that all those who were privileged to hear it must count themselves exceedingly fortunate in having the opportunity.
