MR NASH IN ENGLAND

A VISIT TO SHEFFIELD INSPECTION OF BIG WORKS LONDON, bee. 2. Mr Walter Nash, on arrival at Sheffield on the first stage of his provincial tour to develop reciprocal trade between New Zealand and Britain, said: "I am convinced that extension of the secondary industries of New Zealand will cause trade between the two countries to grow." With Mr Jordan, he inspected the cutlery and silversmith works, and then discussed trade questions with a deputation of industrialists. DISCUSSION ON MIGRATION LONDON, Dec. 2. The Australian Associated Press understands that Mr Nash, in his discussions with the Overseas Settlement Board, emphasised that resumption of migration to New Zealand was largely dependent upon more favourable treatment of New Zealand in the United Kingdom market. British official circles, therefore, are deeply interested in Mr Savage's declaration that New Zealand would not revive migration until jobs were available for migrants. It is considered that Mr Savage's *suggestion that Britain should shoulder the whole responsibility for land settlement schemes is not likely to be fully accepted by the United Kingdom, especially in view of the Overseas Settlement Board's recommendation. It is realised, however, that comment on the subject is premature. The position will be clearer after revelation of the British attitude when the financial position regarding amendment of the Empire Settlement Act is discussed in the House of Commons about December 10. It is understood that the Overseas Settlement Board's report is being closely considered regarding amendments, but it is realised that there are big difficulties ahead. Wellinformed persons summed up the general feeling in the following words: "We are afraid that resumption of large-scale migration is still distant."
