A NEGLECTED TOWNSHIP

TO I'HE EDITOR Sir, —Meeting avter meeting of the Waitaki County Council is held but nothing is ever done about the disgraceful state of the road round the sea from Oamaru to Kakanui. It is hard to understand why this fine sea drive should be so flagrantb neglected. A complete lack of enterprise on the part of the council is showing when it allows the road to the only seaside resort of Oamaru to get into such disrepair. The road is known as the worst in the whole district when it should be one of the best. Many residents and business men of Oamaru have their seaside cribs at Kakanui. and it is surprising that they have not raised a strong protest at the way the road is being neglected. There are potholes and ruts in the township that have not been removed for three years. We are supposed to have a councillor looking after our interests, but he is silent. It is time these " old hands" stood down and gave place to a few young, enterprising men who would give a boost to this district. Some new blood is what is required to infuse a bit of the "go ahead" spirit into the county. A change for the better is overdue, as the " old hands" in office are far behind the times. If the Kakanui asset was in the vicinity of any other town there would be a first-class road to it. If the member for the Kakanui riding would only take a drive out our way he would soon be convinced about the road should he be fortunate enough to reach Kakanui without a broken axle or a collision with the many cows and horses that wander at will along the whole length of the road. The residents here were in hopes of seeing something done before Christmas, but we shall be more isolated than ever now that the main road is being tar-sealed right through as the tourists will be able to motm straight on and cut out even Oamaru itself in spite of the "Come to Oamaru" campaign.—l am, etc., Ratepayer. Kakanui, November 30.
