TRAFFIC CONTROL
CUSTOMHOUSE SQUARE RECOMMENDATIONS TO COUNCIL REMOVAL OF MONUMENT ’ SUGGESTED Proposals for eliminating traffic congestion in Customhouse square and enabling traffic in that locality to be brought under better control are to be submitted to the City Council on Monday night by the General Committee. The report of the committee states that the proposals were agreed to after full discussion at a joint meeting of members of the committee, representatives of the Tramways Committee and delegates from the Automt Association of Otago. The proposals are as follows: That the present tram stop at the Bank of New Zealand by southbound trams be eliminated. That the proposed provision of a permanent safety zone for passengers opposite Sugar’s shop be now proceeded with. That the feasibility and cost of removing Cargill’s Monument in Customhouse square to some other suitable location be investigated. That, should it be hereafter determined that the monument be moved, the site be used as a disembarkation point for south-bound cars and a suitable safety zone for passengers be constructed. That safety zones be provided on each side of the line serving Castle street tramway traffic.
