UNIVERSITIES AND MEDICAL SCHOOLS

NEW ZEALAND STUDENTS (From Our Own Correspondent) (By Air Mail) LONDON, Oct. 24. At this time of year it is interesting to receive official notification from university centres of New Zealanders who are studying and the subjects they are taking. Where there are no students the authorities express regret: therefore, it is evident that men from our Dominion are always welcome. The only New Zealander at Lincoln College, Oxford, is the freshman I. E. Coop (Port Levy, Canterbury), advanced student for the degree of D.Phil. in chemistry. At Oriel, W. F. Monk (Kaikoura), in his second year, is reading for honours in history. Brasenose has one—L. F. Moller (Otago), who is beginning his second year, reading for the B.C.L. degree. Three at Merton are J. A. W. Bennett (Auckland), N. Davis (Rhodes scholar from Otago), and A. M. Harvie—all taking English. Mr Harvie is studying modern languages as well. J. A. E. Mulgan (Auckland) has now a position with the Clarendon Press.

M. M‘G. Cooper (Rhodes scholar) and W. M. Tucker are at University. The former is reading for the degree of D.Phil. in rural economy. He is president of the junior common room and is captain of the University Rugby fifteen. The latter is reading medicine. J. W. Mitchell (Christchurch), formerly a member of St. Catharine’s Society, “migrated” to Trinity at the beginning of this term. He has the status of advanced student, and is reading for the degree of D.Phil. insome subject of physical chemistry. The three New Zealand students at Christ Church are G. de L. Harvie (Auckland) in this third year, reading history: J. D. Lewis (Auckland), first year, taking literse humaniores; and M. J. Hay (Otago), first year, a colonial service student. CAMBRIDGE

Clare has five New Zealanders—-two who are taking mathematics —T. E. Easterfleld and H. W. Wilson (Wanganui), Dr R. M. Barrer (Masterton), who is doing research in chemistry; C. M. P. Brown (Wanganui), and M. K. Macdonald. Newnham has four New Zealanders —Misses C. N. Duigan (Wanganui), studying medicine; S. Duigan, economics; I. M. Lawson (Dunedin), classics; F. U. M. Powell, mathematics. Three at Emmanuel in residence are: C. O. Hutton (Dunedin), geology; C. E. W. Steward, and K. C. W. WestWatson (Christchurch), taking modern languages. L. W. Coleman, second year, and R. F. A. Grey (Wellington) are in residence at Pembroke, Mr Grey has come for one year as a probationer for an appointment in the colonial service. J. W. Potts is a second year man at Gonville and Caius; two first-year students are C. P. S. Allen, taking modern languages, and R. D. Sweet, taking medicine. Mr F. J. H. Gratton (Wellington), who has for some years been engaged in Administrative work in Samoa, is at St. Catharine’s College. A year is to be spent at Cambridge to read for the diploma of anthropology. P. J. C. Burns is at Trinity Hall. Miss S. S. H. Smith (Wellington) is in residence at St. Hugh’s College. Miss M. E. MTndoe (Dunedin) at Girton, is keeping term in order to qualify for her degree. She took Part II of the Natural Science Tripos last year. At Trinity S. G. Elmslie is reading mathematics. I. R. Salmond (Wellington) is in his third year, doing the English Tripos, and N. V. Reed, second year, is doing a special advanced course in law. Both are in residence at Jesus College. MEDICAL SCHOOLS At the present time there are seven New Zealanders at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. D. B. M'Gavin (Wellington) is chief assistant in the surgical department. R. B. Grey (Wellington) and D. P. O’Brien (Auckland) are taking the final F.R.C.S. course. G. Flavell, M. R. Grace (Wanganui), H. G. Singer (Gisborne), and J. E. Hardwick Smith (Wellington) are doing clinical work. . G. T. Harper, son of Dr Philip Harper, of Fiji, has entered St. Thomas’s Hospital Medical School. At St. Mary’s, New Zealanders on the staff are Mr A. E. Porritt, Dr W. E. Henley, and Dr lan M’Lean. Students are W. L. Donohue (Whangarei) and J. E. Lovelock. At Guy’s two New Zealand students are Frank A. Gresham (Hamilton), who is working for the L.D.S., R.C.S (Eng.). He is in his second year and is taking the full course. Karl I. Nissen (Milton) is about to take his examination for this final F.R.C.S course. T. E. Paget (Wellington) and John I. Horne are at University College Hospital Medical School. At St. George's Hospital, Mr Garthowen Williams (Wairarapa), a postgraduate student there, holds the post of chief surgical assistant. STUDYING MUSIC At the Royal College of Music, South Kensington, there are three Associated Board exhibitioners—Edith Astall (Wairoa) is taking piano and violin; Nina V. Blamires (Feilding), violin and singing; Margaret Thorp, piano and composition. W. Betty Blamires (Feilding), an ordinary student, is taking piano and composition. Those at the Royal Academy of Music making the pianoforte thenprincipal study are: Marjorie H. M. Allan (Dunedin). Mary T. Crawshaw (New Plymouth), Janetta M. M’Slay (Invercargill), S. Therle Oswin (Wellington), Terence Vaughan (Christchurch), Jean O. M'Leod (Chris rchurch). Marie J. Berti (Wellington) is taking the violoncello.
