UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES For being unlawfully on licensed premises after hours, John Frederick MTCnight and John Real were each fined 10s, with costs (10s). ' ■'' ■ CASTING MATTER For casting offensive matter in a public' place, : William Clark was convicted and ordered to come up for, sentence any time' within 12 months. ■■■’' MOTORISTS FINED , For failing to have his motor car equipped with efficient brakes, Elias Coory, who stated that he was on sustenance and unable to pay a fine, was convicted and ordered to pay costs (3s), his licence was suspended, and he was prohibited from driving for six weeks. ; John Watson Maxwell, a servicelorry proprietor, pleaded guilty to having worked at his trade on a Sunday, and was fined 10s and costs (10s). Norman Clyde Marriott, who pleaded guilty to a charge of negligent driving, was fined 20s and costs (10s). David Valentine Harbour was fined 10s, with costs (10s), for failing to give way to traffic on the right. For passing a stationary tramcar in Cargill road, James Sinclair Simpson was fined 20s, with costs (3s). CYCLISTS CHARGED Charles M'Laren was fined 5s and costs (10s) for cycling at night without a light.—Similarly charged, James Leonard Boyd was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months. George Clark was fined ss, with costs (10s) for riding a bicycle on a footpath. DANGEROUS DRIVING Alfred Elliott Baker was charged with dangerous driving—Mr J. C. Robertson, who represented the traffic department, stated that the defendant had ridden a, motor-cycle along Princes street, between the Octagon and the Strand Theatre at 30 miles an hour,- and had passed a stationary tramcar on the Wrong side. The defendant’s driving had previously attracted the attention of

the traffic authorities, and only , recently he had been involved in a serious accident , on the Main North road.—The defendant pleaded that he was in a hurry when the offence was committed.—The magistrate took into consideration the fact that the defendant was unemployed and fined him £2 10s and costs (10s). Arnold Fraser Grant, . who admitted having driven a motor car along Anderson’s Bay road at 40 miles an hour, was charged with exceeding the regulation speed limit and was fined £4 and costs (3s). Charles Cull, whdse speed along Anderson’s Bay road was stated to be 45 miles an hour, was charged with dangerous driving and was fined £5 and costs (IOs). —Similarly charged, Alexander S. Walter James Napier, aged 25, pleaded guilty to having stolen a motor tyre and tube valued at £3, the property of James Anderson Henderson, 1 an attache case and radio equipment valued at £ 6, and belonging to /Clifford Brown, and a set, of motor car chains valued at £2, the property of Eric Frederick D’Ath.— Detective Sergeant Hall stated that on October 23, the accused was arested on a charge of stealing petrol and was sentenced to 21 days’ imprisonment.' ’Whilst he was in prison, inquiries revealed that he had a garage, although he had previously denied having such premises. A search of the building disclosed a quantity of articles, and after investigation it was found that these included the equipment mentioned in the charges. The accused had been carrying on the business of a milkman, and the offences had been committed over a period of nine months —The magistrate said that when the accused was previously before the court, the facts seemed to indicate that he had carried out other thefts, and the present charges showed that this was the case.
