A CURIOUS ORIGIN
The term “ blue stocking ” Is often used to describe a studious girl of rare intelligence. It originated as follows:—A certain bishop had a grandson named Benjamin Stillingfleet, who frequently attended Mrs Montague’s evening parties With his dress suit he always wore a pair of blue worsted stockings. Mr Stillingfleet’s conversation was so interesting that, if he were absent, Mrs Montague declared her evening was spoilt without the blue stockings. Thus it came about that people who discussed subjects learnedly were nicknamed “ blue stockings'.”
