FATHERS-IN-LAW
Fathers-in-law are very much undersung and overworked. They enjoy none of the limelight focussed upon the feminine side of the house; they create no laughter at the hands of cartoonists: they have apparently no standard to maintain, either of tyranny or indulgence. Yet what a charming group of middle to old aged men they are! A father-in-law generally has a soft spot in his heart for his son’s wife, and unless the young matron is a selfish woman she returns this affection. All the friction which makes the air electric when mother-in-law comes into the room disappears when “ pater ’’ enters. He is a natural peacemaker. If I had to offer advice to a young girl contemplating marriage I would say, “ Pick your father-in-law first . . . then marry his son . . . and you will all live happily ever after.”—Australian exchange.
