MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held on Thursday afternoon and was attended by Messrs F. J. Conn (president, in the chair), L. C. Hazlett, J. Mitchell, J. E. Brunton, B. S. Irwin, S. Bowman, D. B. Craighead, H. M. Driver, W. S. Thomson, J. Mee, J. Young, D. Ireland, A. Johnson, W. Lee, and J. M. Fraser. Before commencing the business of the meeting the president made feeling reference to the death of an old and respited member of the society, Mr H. W. Reid, of Messrs John Reid and Sons, who had been a member of the society almost since its inception and whose patronage and support had been extended to the society for many years. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Reid and family was carried, members standing in silence. The Executive Committee reported on the society’s investments, the question of side-show space, and other business. —The committee’s recommendations were adopted. The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £154 18s. A letter was received from the society’s solicitors ii. reference to a guarantee required for payment of an account, and an application was made for a reduction of rental in the Brydone Hall.—The sub-commit-tee’s recommendations in the matter were adopted. Advice was received from the district traffic manager of railways, Dunedin, that stock from the show would be carried back on the Saturday evening, December 12, from stations Oamaru to Balclutha and possibly further south and also to stations on the Central Otago line. The New Zealand Aberdeen Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association, Hastings, presented £5 5s to be awarded in the Aberdeen Angus section at the forthcoming Summer Show.— The donation was acknowledged with thanks. Mr James Scott (Opoho), who already had given two cups to the society, intimated that he would be giving another cup, probably for most points in farmers’ butter.—Mr Scott’s generosity was noted with appreciation. A letter was received from Mr George Ross (Palmerston), with the advice that Mr Donald Munro would again provide sheep for the dog trials for the forthcoming show.— The secretary pointed out that the success of this important section of the show was due to the active assistance given by its supporters, chief amongst whom were Messrs Donald Munro and George Ross.— On the motion of the president a vote of appreciation was recorded. Mr Duthie reported that, with the approval of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, the export fat lamb competition would take place at the company’s works at Burnside on Saturday, December 5. An invitation had been extended to farmers of Otago to be present, and i was expected that the killing, which would commence early, would be finished about 10.30 or 11 a.m., after which luncheon would be provided, to be followed by an informal opening of the new wing of the company’s work. Addresses would be given by visitors and local men interested in export generally. The secretary reported that since last meeting he had accompanied Mr Alex. Murray in the Owaka, Wairuna, Clinton. Waiwera, Ashley Towns, Clarksville, Crichton, Hillend, Awamangu, Pukeawa, Pukepito, Tuapeka West, Tuapeka Flat and Waitahuna districts, and, with Mr David of Northburn Station, in the Arrowtown, Queenstown, Lower Shotover. districts, when numerous flocks in the ewe hogget competition were inspected, and the following awards made:— No, 1 District.—Fat lamb production: W. Craigie (Owaka). 85 points, Dual Purpose.—Class 2: Charles Begg (Pukeawa), 95 points, 1; D. M'Kenzie (Wairuna), 94 points, 2; W. Bradfield (Owaka Valley), 91J points, 3. Wool Production.—Class 3: John Anderson (Waiwera), 82| points, 1. Lakes District Competition.—D. Cockburn (Queenstown), 87 points, 1; J. L. Brown (Lower Shotover),.7B points, 2; Mrs M'Lean (Queenstown), 77i points, 3. Wool Production.—T. M. Houston (Lower Shotover), 84i points, 1; W. Reid (Arrowtown), 77 points, 2. A special vote of thanks was passed to the two judges, Messrs A. S. Murray and D. Middleton, for their valuable services to the society and the Competitions Committee. The secretary explained that a number of competitors who were unable to muster their best sh%ep made entries to give the competition the first year start, and he expressed his appreciation of the very strong sporting spirit evident throughout the competition. HOLIDAY FOR THE SHOW At the request of several tradesmen it was resolved to ask the Mayor if he would declare Saturday, December 12, a holiday. The tender of Mr J. B. Wootton for the Summer Show catering was accepted. It was resolved, if possible, to secure the Pipe Band for the afternoon of People’s Day of the show. The following dates were fixed for the 1937 Winter Show:—Tuesday, June 22 to Saturday, June 26. The chairman of the Grounds and Buildings Committee reported that the new cattle pens would be erected in time for the show. Mr A. F. Duthie, who had accepted another position, tendered his resignation as secretary of the society. On the motion of the president the resignation was accepted with regret. It was resolved to advertise for applications for the position of secretary and organiser.
