CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

DIRECTORS’ MEETING It was extremely gratifying to the retiring president, office-bearers and directors, as it must have been for those elected to carry on the work of the Caledonian Society for the current year, to see a record attendance of directors present in the board room on Wednesday evening. The retiring president, Mr J. Hope, and 35 directors were present. Mr Hope extended a welcome to the new directors appointed at the annual meeting of members. The financial position, although still showing a heavy interest account payable to the bank on the operating account, showed that the overdraft had been reduced and that the financial year just closed produced a surplus of revenue over expenditure—the first time since 1930. The assets had also been maintained and the Caledonian Grounds steadily improved. Mr Hope nominated Mr J. A. Johnston, the senior vice-president, for the office of president for the ensuing year, and Mr Johnston was unanimously elected. Other officers elected were as follows: —Senior vice-president, Mr W. H. MacKenzie; junior vice-president, Mr A. A. Paape; treasurer, Mr W. H. M'Leod; secretary-organiser. Mr J S. Douglas. The election of standing committees for the year was approved as follows:

The secretary of the committee of the South Dunedin Unemployed Association wrote requesting permission to hold their annual children’s' treat at the Caledonian Ground on Wednesday, December 23 Granted. The secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association wrote regarding the society’s decision on training fees—As this required a notice of motion before any alteration could be proposed, Mr B, M'Kernan gave notice accordingly for the next meeting of directors. , , Mr Northey brought forward the matter of the surface of the ground that was removed through Drainage Board work, and this was referred to the Grounds Committee. Mr Duff referred to the system in vogue of the groundsman collecting training fees, and suggested some consideration being given to unemployed athletes. Mr Paape suggested that the Finance Committee report on the question, and this was approved. Invitations were received from the Dunedin Scottish Society and the St. Andrew’s Society for the president to attend their respective functions this month. Mr A. A. Paape referred to the great opportunity that was offered to members and friends of the societies of becoming members of the conducted touring party that would be leaving New Zealand early in June, 1937. He advocated the society endeavouring to secure its quota of representation so as to place Dunedin and Otago prominently in the party.—Mr Wheeler stated that the tour was under the patronage of the Council of Dunedin Scottish Societies and that each society had been advised.
