Limited. The name “lych-gate” was in use in Saxon times, more than 1300 years ago (writes Christopher Wenlock, in Sunday at Home). “Lich” signifies “ corpse,” the Anglo-Saxon “he meaning a dead body. So the lychgate is the gate through which the corpse is borne on its way to the tomb; and the pathway along which the funeral passes from the gate is called the lych-path or lych-way. In Gloucester there was until recently a lych-stone, in Lych Lanp, where the body of Edward II rested when being conveyed to the cathedral for sepul-ture-showing that cotfn-stones or lych-stones were not confined exclusively to the churchyard. The name Lichfield, it will be seen, means “the Held of the dead,” and it is supposed that Lichfield Cathedral stands on the spot where Christian martyrs were buried in the year 290.
