Having been on the road for nearly three years, a 49-year-old Scotsman has reached Kampala, Uganda, on a walk from London to Capetown—to find work. He is ex-Sergeant James Scott, of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who left London on October 1, 1933, on his 12,000-mile trek to the Cape. A native of Greenock, he was unable to find work at home, so, rather than remain on the dole or be helped by his children, he decided to walk to South Africa. Carrying a kitbag weighing about 601 b, which includes a tent, sleeping bag, change of clothes, and a few bare necessities, Mr Scott walked out of London with nothing else but a personal letter of introduction to the Capetown Highland Regiment signed by Sir lan Hamilton. During his three years’ wanderings he has not once been ill. He has already worn out six pairs of boots. It Talks: The shop front display tells the story eloquently, but it is a fixture which attracts only the passers-by. The Otago Daily Times carries the tidings everywhere.
