THE Otago Daily Times. “ Inveniam viam aut faciam ." [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1865.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

In the Provincial Council yesterday the Speaker took the chair at 2 o’clock. The report by the Chief Railway Engineer, on the proposed Southern Railway; a correspondence on the Princes street Reserve ; and a statement 'of financial transactions, - were laid on the table. .j. In reply to Mr Mouat, the Provincial Treasurer said that only the Municipalities of Port Chalmers and Dunedin owed money to the Province. Neither of them had paid interest or sinking fund. The City Council had asked that the proposal to make the loan a grant should be laid ‘before’ the Council; . . ■ ■ , , The Provincial Treasurer moved that, the House go into Committee' to ? con- ■ sider the relations between the General and Provincial Governments. Mr. Vogel moved, as an amendment, the appointment of a Select Committee to prepare resolutions on the subject. ■' ’ A debate ensued, and the amendment was carried* without a division. A Committee was appointed by ballot, and were instructed to report on Monday. . . An Act was passed during the late session of the General Assembly for facilitating the construction of water-races upon the Gold-fields, and otherwise to amend the Goldfields Acts of 1862-63. It is of so much importance that we offer no apology for giving a synopsis of it. The preamble defines the intention of it to be to provide for the further development of the Gold-fields, as well as to make certain amendments. . . . There was not a good attendance at the Theatre Royal last evening, but this may be accounted for in some degree by the inclemency of the weather. ... On Friday evening the performance is to be . for the benefit of the Benevolent Institution., A meeting “to take into consideration the present state of general and political affairs in the locality, as well as the colony at largo,” was held at Port Chalmers on Saturday. The meeting was only intended to be anticipatory of a more numerous meeting to be held on an early day, and it was resolved that a full meeting of the inhabitants -should be called for: Wednesday evening, to take place in the Royal Assembly Hall. The Californian equestrian troupe have arrived at Port Chalmers by the northern road, and are now performing there, previous to the commencement of a series of performances in the Princess Theatre, Dunedin. Pure Bred Sheep.—The “Age ” in referring to the Port Phillip Show, says of the diffe ant breeds of. sheeps- “ From the tone of conversation at the Show, we find that the aptitude of each breed of sheep for certain localities is much better understood than formerly. The Leicesters and Lincolns are looked upon as the best for warm distri. ts ; the Cotswolds for the cooler parts of the colony, whilst the South downs are in favor of crossing with the Merinos to make a small neat carcase for the butcher. For farmers, however, the Southdown and Merino ewes are not the best, the Southdown being only a shade less erratic than the Merino. Open downs, with a wide extent of pasture, are most suitable for both; and hence those who have small enclosures will find the heavier breeds the best adapted to the conditions they have to offer.”
