Just 122 years ago a strange crew sailed from N.S.W. for New Zealand. They included the fighting Chaplain, Rev. Samuel Marsden, two friends with wives and sons, three ticket-of-leave convicts, eight Maoris, and a crew of eight. The cargo included two mares, two cows, a bull, a stallion, and sundry sheep and poultry. On landing at Whangaroa great difficulty was experienced with the suspicious Te Pahi Maori Tribe. But when the stock was landed the Maoris stared in open-mouth astdnishment at the big horned and maned animals, and when Marsden rode one of the horses, he was acclaimed all-powerful. Little did Marsden realise that his horses and cattle were the forerunners of an industry which has coloured all New Zealand history with its romance, thrills and hardships, which has continually played a leading part in our development, which has made New Zealand the largest dairy-producing country in the world.
