THE BATTLE FOR MADRID SUCCESSES CLAIMED (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON. Oct. 15. The rebels have begun their advance towards Madrid on a 30mile front from the south-west Important successes are claimed. The fact that the movement is limited to the south-west is believed to be due to a succession of Government counter attacks on several sectors. The Government is rushing reinforcements to the south-west from Madrid. The stampede of people from Madrid continues Thousands of children are arriving at Barcelona. TWO TRANSPORTS SUNK MADRID, Oct. 15. It is reported from Tangier that a Government submarine sank two insurgent transports conveying Moorish reinforcements to the mainland. TRIAL OF REBELS VALENCIA, Oct. 15. Sitting in their shirtsleeves, a “ Red ” tribunal of justice, consisting of a magistrate and 14 jurors, sat in solemn conclave to try 35 alleged traitors, of whom only 14 attended in the flesh. The others were tpied in default, but they were all dead, declared a spectator. Nevertheless, 19 corpses were duly convicted and sentenced to death; but two were acquitted, and the stain on their honour was posthumously erased. Counsel for the remainder of the corpses remarked that they must be considered as having committed suicide for their temerity in rising against the people. FRENCH “RED” PROPOSALS PARIS, Oct. 15. M. Brouckere (president of the Socialist International) and M. Adler (secretary), at a meeting of' the Socialist and Communist Internationals, refused to agree to proposals by the Communists M. Thorez and M. Cachin, for summoning the workers’ organisations to discuss common action with a view to arousing public opinion in favour of the Spanish Government and preventing the manufacture and transport of munitions to the insurgents. PORTUGUESE REPLY AWAITED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Oct. 15. Following a letter to M. Kagan at the Soviet Embassy stating that the Portuguese Government had been requested, in accordance with the rules and procedure laid down by the committee on September 21, to supply at as early a date as possible such explanations as are necessary to establish the facts, Lord Plymouth wrote: “Since the reply of the Portuguese Government has not yet been received, and since, moreover, your Note of October 12 contains no additional evidence whatsoever to show that the agreement is in fact being violated. 1 do not think it would be proper for me to summon a further meeting of the committee at this stage to discuss this matter.” M. STALIN’S MESSAGE MOSCOW, Oct. 15. (Received Oct. 16, at 5.5 p.m.) M. Stalin has sent the following message to the Spanish Communist: Tarty: “Toilers in the Soviet are only fulfilling their duty by rendering every assistance to the masses of Spain.”
