OTAGO BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (Otago branch) was held yesterday afternoon. Mr Douglas M. Spedding presided over a good attendance of members. Moving the adoption of the annual report, the chairman discussed at some length the conditions of business during the past year. He went on to say that it was pleasing to note that candidates were still coming forward to sit for the examination held by the institute, and though the membership was not as large as they would like, it was hoped that with better times ahead the number of candidates would gradually increase. The aimh of the institute had been very aptly described by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., at the annual dinner of the Waikato branch held recently He had stated: " That the institute aimed at serving the public, educating its members, ind inculcating the principles of business morality among them so that they might give better service to the public." In conclusion, he thanked the members of the executive for their co-operation and assistance during a difficult year. Mr P W Stabb seconded the motion and said they had had a strenuous and uncertain year Many of them had been worried regarding the ultimate outcome of all the new legislation. There had always been a difficulty regarding mortgages and this difficulty had now become acute. In .espet. to new mortgage agreements the Prime Minister had given an assurance that the legislation which was being introduced would lot be applicable to these Mr Stabb also referred to the difficulties which would inevitably arise out of the shortening of office hours. The institute had been closely in touch with all these matters and he thought they had come through the ?e:ic- satisfactorily. The motion wa? carried without discussion. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President Mr P W Ftabb; vicepresidents Messrs T F Basire and L J. T. Ireland; committee—Messrs H L. Young, L. D. Ritchie, J. B. Waters, J. W H Clarke: auditor, Mr C R Smith. On the motion of Mr Ritchie, a resolution expressing appreciation of the work which had been done by Mr Spedding as presidenl during the vear was carried
