THE Otago Daily Times. " Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1865.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

It will be seen that the Escort, which arrived in town yesterday, brought down 9127 oz. of gold—a very satisfactory return from the Otago Gold Fields, considering the late exodus, and one representing a much larger yield per man than has yet been' realised on the West Coast diggings. It is difficult to understand the infatuation under which so many are forsaking ground that furnishes, such continued evidence of its auriferous wealth. The "Oamaru Times" observes:— "We are glad to learn that the punt on the Waitaki, near Mr Christian Hille's accommodation house, is expected to be completed by the first of December. The right has been transferred by Messrs Douglas, Alderson and Co. to Mr Hille, who has secured the sanction of the Provincial Governments of both Otago and Canterbury for the work. The punt will be constructed according to plans and specifications emanating from the Government of this Province, and also under the superintendence of some officer appointed for the purpose. The work is a very important one, and should tend greatly to stimulate the trade between Oamaru and the Canterbury side of the Waitaki. It will afford unwonted facilities during the ensuing season for the conveyance of wool from these parts to Oamaru for shipment, and we have no doubt that a great boon will be thereby" conferred on this town and district. We congratulate Mr Hille on his enterprising spirit, and hope he may drive a prosperous trade between the two provinces." A meeting of the Council of the Otago Rifle Association was held last evening at M'Cubbin's Hotel, Rattray street. Messrs Stavely, Hard (Naval Brigade), J. E. Hannah, and Hislop were elected to fill vacancies in the Council. A Committee was appointed to wait upon members for their annual subscriptions; and it was resolved that honorary members should be admitted upon payment of a guinea per annum. The "Oamaru Times" of the sth instant says:—"lt was reported in Oamaru yesterday—but for the truth of the statement we cannot vouch—that the Pyke exploring party had been successful in crossing to the West Coast, and also that another rush had occurred to the head of Lake Wanaka." A public meeting was held at Oamaru, in the Court House, on Monday evening, for the purpose of taking into consideration the advisability of instituting a Branch Savings Bank at that place. ... The meeting of the Dunedin Cricket Club, convened for yesterday afternoon, passed off most successfully, upwards of thirty members being present. . . . Persons wishing to join the Club have to be proposed and seconded by two members, and approved of by the Committee. The annual subscription has been fixed at the moderate sum of two guineas, so as to be within the reach of all players. THE ESCORT. The usual fortnightly escort arrived in town yesterday afternoon, bringing the following quantities of gold:—

BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Christchurch, Friday, 4.10 p.m. The Hokitika mail arrived last night. Business was brisk at the auction rooms. The lOOlbs of gold reported as being obtained some weeks since was got near Bruce Bay. The rush thither still continues.
