MINERS ON STRIKE
DISPUTE AT TARATU On Monday morning the miners at the Taratu Collieries held a stop-work meeting, the result of which has been to cause a complete stoppage of coal production at these mines. Under the recent legislation of the Government, the mines have been working, since July 1, under the terms of the Arbitration Court award of 1931. under which increased wages applied to all employees. The former conditions of work were also reverted to. A few weeks ago application was made by the Taratu Miners' Union for a new award, and the case was heard by the Conciliation Commissioner at Kaitangata on August 8, when certain demands, such as a seven-hour day and other important alterations in the working of coal mines, were referred, with the consent of all parties, to the Arbitration Court. According to information received last evening the neighbouring mines at Kaitangata are not affected by the trouble.
