NOTES ON THE RACING (Special to Daily Times) PAEROA, Oct. 5. The each-way favourite Phillemup finished resolutely to score narrowly in the Rotokohu Hack Handicap. Aramis was first away, but Ellanui soon reached the front to make play from Gay Flier, Aramis, and Phillemup. Entering the straight Phillemup commenced to move up, and he overhauled Ellanui near the post to beat him by a head. Miss Musketoon battled on to get third, two lengths and ahalf away, and Gay Flier was fourth, with Aramis and Rothoon well beaten. Phillemup maintained his reputation for consistency, and gave further evidence that he is staying on better than formerly. ! The third fancy,. Race Whip, led all the way to win the Second Handicap Hurdles from the favourite Valpai, who was well ridden by W. Rennie. but was steadied by his weight. Race Whip soon established a lead of several lengths, and five furlongs from home was just clear of Kanapa and Valpai. Nearing the home turn Kanapa ran up to Race Whip, and they rose at the last fence almost together, with* Valpai just in behind on the rails. Race Whip pecked on landing, and it appeared as if Valpai would get up and win. However, Race Whip went on again to beat Valpai by half a length, with Kanapa two lengths away third. En Tour was fourth, followed by Survanna and Rusty Jack. It was Race Whip's first success, but he is on the ud grade, and may yet fulfil his early promise. The moderately-fanced Gadger brought off a mild surprise in the Oc- : tober Hack Handicap, which provided an exciting finish. Joyzell and Gadger were, quickly prominent, and along the back he was in command from Full o' Scotch, who had moved up very smartly after passing the six furlongs. Rounding the home turn there was. little between Gadger and Full o' Scotch, vvitb Pound Sterling.and Joyzell next,'and- Whirlmint. moving up quickly., The leaders came away from the rails in the straight,-but Gadger. hung, on to win by a short head from Whirlmint. who defeated Full o' Scotch by a similar margin. Leo Colossus was fourth, succeeded by Joyzell, Seaman and Pound Sterling. The placed horses all-ran fine races .and had a great tussle over the last furldng. Ahbther surprise was registered in the President's Handicap when Orac jumped to the front at the barrier rise' and led .throughout to return double figures oh the win machine. - Te Hai, Bonny Gay and Silver Brier were the winner's closest followers for most of the Way and they were just behind him at the turn, where Sinking Fund was moving up. Once in.line for the post Bonny Gay and Sinking Fund challenged, but Orac stayed on gamely to win by a short neck from Sinking, Fund, who beat Bonny Gay by a length. Silver Brier was a close fourth, followed by Delrain and Te Hai. It was Orac's first success in open company and his best performance to date. Sinking Fund ran his usual honest race and looked as if he would be improved by the run. Showing improvement upon her running on the first day, Lady Valma prevailed narrowly in the Novice Handicap after being well handled by A. Tinker. Lady Valma and Strathire were smartest at the beginning, and they were the early leaders from Racela, Queen Lu and Locknit. Strathire was in command at the top, and led into the straight from Queen Lu, Lady Valma, Susan and Locknit. Near the post Lady Valma made an effort, and she won by a short head from Strathire. Poker Face finished fast on the outside to be a neck away third, and Susan was fourth, followed by Queen Lu, Racela and Brown Lap. The class was not good, and Lady Valma just wrested the honours from Strathire. Locknit raced below expectations, but should not be condemned for the failure. The Second Steeplechase Handicap was a chapter of accidents/and with a round to go Friendly Boy and Kmkle were the only ones left standing. Friendly Boy was about six lengths clear of Kinkle at this stage, and he retained the lead to the ; end-to win all out by five lengths. Golden- England, Valpeen'and The Hiker, were-re-mounted by■■" bystanders, -.and their efforts roused, considerable enthusiasm Golden England came into the straight some lengths ahead/of Valpeen. and his rider slowed him down to half pace after jumping the last fence: Valpeen then dashed up and headed him, but Golden England was got going to get to the judge first. However, the judge was under the impression that Golden England had not completed the course, and hoisted Valpeen's number, third, which was soon .rectified when it was pointed out that Golden England had been the full distance. The Opotiki trainer, J. White, scored his third win at the meeting when the each-way favourite, Blue Needle, prevailed in the Railway Handicap. Blue Needle was quickly in the lead from Grand Score, Lady Ruler, Wahine Reihi, and Legatee, who was handy on the rails. Entering the straight Blue Needle, Grand Score, and Wahine Reihi were almost abreast in the lead, and were followed by Legatee and Lady Ruler. Once they straightened up Legatee challenged between Blue Needle and Grand Score but he failed to reach Blue Needle by a neck. Star Artist was three parts of a length away third, and Wahine Reihi was fourth, followed by Lady Ruler anc 1 Grand Score. Blue Needle led throughout, and deserved her success, although Legatee appeared a shade unlucky. Star Artist came from the rear for third. Only four started in the Farewell Hack Handicap, and the favourite, Johnny Walls, scored comfortably. Sir Tommy was first away from Lady Diana, Johnny Walls, and Bonny Song, and when the field had settled down Johnny Walls had run up second. Nearing the turn Johnny Walls ran up to Sir Tommy and soon drew clear in the straight to win by a length and a-half from ' Bonnie Song, who came home strongly to beat Sir Tommy by a length. Lady Diana was a couple of lengths away in the rear. Johnny Walls k much improved, and had no difficulty in winning, although he showed a tendency to loaf at the turn, anc his rider had to shake him up a little.
