DAFFODIL DAY

PLUNKET SOCIETY’S APPEAL

GENEROUS RESPONSE FROM PUBLIC The generous response of tire public was the pleasing feature of the annual Daffodil Day appeal made by the Plunket Society yesterday, and as a result of the combined efforts of a willing band of collectors and those in charge of the various stalls which had been erected at different points in Princes street the large sum of £377 8s 9d was collected. This is approximately £l7 more than was taken last year. Added to this, the amount collected by Lady Sidey and Mrs Sandford Cox, who arranged a canvass of the business houses of the city, has brought the total to over £450, and there are still collections to come in. The organisation of the appeal was in the hands of Mrs J. Williams, who is to be congratulated on the excellent financial result. The collectors were on the streets from an early hour, and there were few who did not willingly give something towards the worthy object, while the well-laden stalls were freely patronised during the day. Large baskets of daffodils, some from the wellknown Wetherstone estate and others from the Botanic Gardens and the garden of Sir Heaton Rhodes, Canterbury, were prominent among the goods on the stalls, and these met with a ready sale. The stallholders were as follows: — Exchange.—Miss N. Reid, Mesdames T. Brown, Norman Speight, Solomon and Clapperton. Bank of New Zealand.—Mesdames J M. Galloway, R. Ritchie, A. Barnett, M. Myers and Miss Downie Stewart. A.M.P. Corner.—Mesdames Andrew Begg, W. B. Taverner, W. Wilson, K. Ross and Paris. City Hotel Corner.—Mesdames Donald Reid. Cleghorn, Watson and Cunningham. H.B. Corner.—Lady Allen, Mesdames Cairney, J. Williams, Lindsay Allen. Pratt and Allen. Moray Place.—Mesdames Sandford Cox, Dawson, Mandeno and Gillan. Among those who assisted with the collection boxes were home science students, old girls of the Girls’ High School and private schools, Karitane nurses, and friends of the society.
