ro THE EDITOR Sir, —Cr Colquhoun seems to be very sore about the advrce the council secured “gratis” from newspaper correspondents. It is certainly cheaper by hundreds of pounds than Mr Furkert’s report in 1917, now adopted by the Railways Department 20 years later Cr Colquhoun’s soreness is not to be wondered at, seeing that the advice of the correspondents has been heeded by the head engineers of the Railways Department and acted upon “ gratis,” while they have neglected, quite wisely, his own advice shouted from his chair of privilege. Cr Colquhoun would be wise to remember that several of the correspondents—namely. Messrs D. S, Bain, E. S. Brewster, J B. Chapman, J. Butterfield, and G. L. Grenfell—have all given “gratis" services to the public of North Otago of at least equal value to his own Moreover, if any of these gentlemen desired to leave Oamaru they would have much more difficulty than he.
