BETTER TRAVEL BY RAIL

Although travelling by tram in the last few years has been made more and more comfortable, British railway authorities are directing their energies to modernising their coaches on a far more elaborate scale than has yet been seen. On the L.M.S. railway, for instance, low-waisted windows, arm rests, and shoulder reading lights are being standardised in passenger coaches for long-distance services. About a thousand third-class corridor coaches now have arm rests and shoulder lights for reading. There is also in progress the modernisation of the restaurant cai and sleeping car fleets. Over 40 ne'w dining cars have recently been placed in commission, and many more are being built. A programme for,the replacement or renovation of the whole of the L.M.S. sleeping cars, which was started two years ago, will be completed shortly; as a result there wil : be 115 new or renovated vehicles. Thil railway company is also building this year nearly 700 new passenger-carrying vehicles.
