THE MEMBER FOR DUNEDIN WEST
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—We seem to be on the subject of Dr M'Millan and his activities, but I do not agree with a correspondent whose letter appears in to-day's paper. I think he must have discovered how to cram 96 hours' work into 24, How else could he leave Wellington so often on Friday evening and arrive back there on Tuesday morning? Either that or Dr M'Millan is not spending enough time on the job, or else the other politicians are spending too much. You cannot have it both ways. He must be an absolute gold mine to the Railways and Union Steam Ship Company. If members would always take a long week off to travel home, just think of the gas and electricity saved in Wellington, think of the money spent on meals while travelling, think of the tips and -taxis, of the hot baths, the washing and ironing necessary after a day in the train! Good gracious, I believe I have solved the unemployment problem. Then, when that • happens, imagine Dr M'Millan bounding gaily off to catch the train or ferry or both, and carolling as he goes, "A life on the ocean wave, a home on the rolling train," and seeing nothing but good in humanity! The thought is too beautiful, but what really worries me is just what amount of the travelling expenses does the poor taxpayer provide? Do you know, Mr Editor? I don t.—l am, etc., Nosey Parker.
[As a member of Parliament Dr M'Millan possesses a railway pass, and his steamer fares are paid by the poor taxpayer" to whom our correspondent refers.—Ed., O.D.T.]
